Winnipeg’s 2012 Folklorama kicks-off August 4th; marking the start of two-weeks featuring global culture and festivities across downtown. Pavilions host food, cultural exhibitions and performances representing individual countries from around the world. The 2012 Manitoba Highland Gathering takes place June 16th. Hosted at Selkirk Park, less than 40 km north of Winnipeg in downtown Selkirk. Featuring the Highland Dancing Competition along with Piping and Drumming events, the Manitoba Highland Gathering makes a fun summer getaway. In addition to Scottish food and cultural entertainment, enjoy canoe and kayak events, sheep shearing and Sheep Dog trials. Bring the family - there are special events and fun for the wee-folk as well.
Islendingadagurinn – the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba, bills itself as Manitoba’s oldest continuous running ethnic festival. 2012 marks the 123rd annual festival hosted in Gimli 100km north of Winnipeg. Held August 3rd through the 6th at Gimli Park, with the Viking encampment on Harbour Park Hill. Festivities include Shot Put competitions, kid’s entertainment, and craft vendors. Stay well into evening for the fireworks show topping off Saturday’s events.
Thompson in Northern Manitoba is a gateway to the wildlife and wilderness areas of the north. Paint Lake Provincial Park is ideal in summer for water recreation and fishing. Pisew Falls is a must see destination and a great area for hiking. Thompson’s MacLean Park hosts summer events including the National Aboriginal Day Celebration and a festive Canada Day festival featuring ethnic food, live entertainment, and kid’s activities topped off by an evening fireworks show.
Brandon in southwestern Manitoba is conveniently located along the Trans Canada Highway. Home of Brandon Hills Wildlife Management Area – a great spot for wildlife viewing during summer and for hunting during the season. This is fishing season, check out Max Lake and Adam Lake in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, or William Lake Provincial Park. William Lake is also popular for windsurfers – enjoy your favourite outdoor activities in Manitoba.
