Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Founded in 2008 and opened in 2014, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is an iconic national museum located in downtown Winnipeg – and neighboring the Forks National Historic Site.

Set in Manitoba, the CMHR is the first national museum established since 1967, and the only one outside of the Capital Region. The museum covers historic and current events in the field of human rights across 10 impressive galleries. These galleries include Indigenous Perspectives, Protecting Rights in Canada, Examining The Holocaust & Other Genocides, and Rights Today.

Aside from its content, the CMHR is known for its architecture – both outside and within. Designed by Antoine Predock, the museum encompasses 24,154 square meters, and is topped by the 100-meter Tower of Hope.

CMHR offers tours (including the Mikinak-Keya Spirit Tour and Discover the Building), a museum boutique, and the ERA Bistro.

FortWhyte Alive

You and the entire family can enjoy an outdoor adventure the next time you visit Manitoba. Head for Winnipeg and check out FortWhyte Alive. Across 640 acres of land, you'll find lush prairies, lakes, forested areas, and wetlands.

Fun Mountain Waterslide Park is open daily from mid-June through late August. Some of the must-try attractions include the Bumper Boats, and the "biggest hot tub in Manitoba." Some of the slides you need to try include Kowabunga, one of the longest slides at the park, and the Enchanted River.

Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens

While visiting Winnipeg and the Assiniboine Park, take a walk through the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. This beautiful garden was established in 1992, featuring the work of gifted artist, Dr. Leo Mol.

Stroll the grounds to view the numerous sculptures created by Mol, who donated the sculptures and many works of art to the city, after moving to Manitoba from the Ukraine in 1949.

Afterwards, step into the Leo Mol School House Studio to see how the sculptures are made and watch the "Light and Shadow" video.

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site

During your travels in southern Manitoba, get in touch with the history of the area near Winnipeg. Visit the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, located along the Red River north of Winnipeg, and see this preserved 1830 fort was built twenty miles north of the site of the original Fort Garry, which was destroyed by flooding.

Bring your camera to capture images of the fort's original buildings, since declared a National Historic Site of Canada. Tour this living history site to meet the costumed interpreters, as they tend to the gardens and carry on daily activities.

Capital City residents and visitors ready to watch history in the making should visit Winnipeg's Manitoba Legislative Building.

See the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from the visitors gallery of this 1920 neoclassical building, which encompasses 250,000 square feet of space and has numerous beautiful features.

Key building features include the exterior statues, the Golden Boy gold statue on top of the domed ceiling, and the brown-veined Carrara marble Grand Staircase in the main entrance.

There two life size North American Bison statues next to the staircase, the Rotunda, the Pool of the Black Star, the Lieutenant-Governor's Reception Room and the Legislative Chamber.

Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame

Located inside the Sport For Life Centre, the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame opened in the fall of 2012 at its new location in Winnipeg. Featured Hall of Famers include Vince Leah, a famous author and sportsman as well as George Knudson, a championship golfer.

The Museum is run as a charitable organization by a volunteer board of directors, passionate about sports and it’s place in the history of Manitoba. Museum artifacts include photos, newspaper articles and equipment used by athletes in their sport. This hall of fame also encompasses the Curling, Basketball and Bowling Halls of Fame.

MTS Centre

The MTS Centre is the newest multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility in Winnipeg, replacing the demolished Winnipeg Area upon its opening in 2004. The 440,000 sq ft building is home to the Winnipeg Jets National Hockey League team with a seating capacity of 15,004.

The building's excellent acoustics make it an ideal location for concerts and other entertainment occasions. Popular events hosted at this Manitoba centre also include the World U-17 Hockey Challenge and the AHL All Star Classic.

Home to THC, Total Hockey Training Centers, MTS Iceplex is Manitoba's premier hockey destination. Visitors travel from across North America to attend camps and train at this facility.

The Ice Lab, a top of the line goalie training center, features Dartfish Biomechanical Analysis Software and a high definition camera on the ice to educate goalies on the intricacies of their craft.

In addition to the state of the art goalie-training center, MTS is also home to Northwestern Sports Hockey camp.

This camp has been training emerging athletes for over 25 years and can accommodate all skill levels from learn to skate to performance level.

With four regulation size ice rinks, concessions and 20 dressing rooms, MTS is open 365 days a year to accommodate all of the ice time the Winnipeg community demands.

Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre

While visiting southern Manitoba, take time to explore the great outdoors. Visit the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre north of Winnipeg to learn about the beautiful restored Oak Hammock Marsh and the animals that reside in it. In addition to the marsh, the Wildlife Management Area includes artesian springs, tall-grass prairie, aspen-oak bluff and waterfowl lure crops.

While at the marsh, keep a lookout for some of the three hundred species of birds, twenty-five species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and fish that live in the marsh. Enjoy hiking on the thirty kilometers of trails throughout the marsh or attend one of the several events, programs, workshops, eco-tours or camps held at the award-winning centre.

Provencher Bridge

A symbolic downtown landmark, the Provencher Bridge crosses the Red River and connects downtown Winnipeg with St. Boniface in Manitoba, Canada.

The third in its place, the current Provencher Bridge actually consists of two bridges – a vehicular bridge and a pedestrian bridge.

Named Esplanade Riel after politician and Manitoba founder Louis Riel, the pedestrian bridge was completed in 2004.

The Royal Canadian Mint's high-volume manufacturing facility in Winnipeg is where all Canadian circulating coins are produced.

The Winnipeg plant opened in 1976, after the Mint headquarters in Ottawa, became established in 1908. Over one billion circulation coins are produced here each year.

Schedule time for a guided tour of the plant while in Manitoba, to see the fast-paced operations.

Shaw Park

Sport For Life Centre

Dedicated to “profoundly improving access to sport and sport training across Manitoba,” the Sport For Life Centre is the first facility of its kind in Canada and in Winnipeg.

The 100-year-old building was renovated by Sport Manitoba and is now home to a sport performance center, a sport medicine center, a sport resource center and the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

The Forks National Historic Site

Downtown Winnipeg is alive with history. Nestled at the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River, is The Forks National Historic Site. This site has been a meeting place for more than 6,000 years, when the early Aboriginal peoples met to trade goods.

Archaeologists discovered the Aboriginal camps located at the site, between 1989 and 1994.

The site continued to be a meeting place for the first Europeans that arrived in 1738, in addition to buffalo hunters, Scottish settlers, immigrants and pioneers. While in downtown WinnipegManitoba make plans to visit The Forks for an afternoon of fun at the variety of shops, attractions and restaurants.

The Manitoba Museum

Plan a visit to Winnipeg and check out the Manitoba Museum. A definite must-see in Manitoba, the museum showcases over 2.6 million specimens and artifacts, along with the Planetarium and Science Gallery. With such a large collection, the items are rotated throughout the Discovery Room.

Schedule at least a day to see all that the museum offers. This incredible museum is home to a variety of galleries including the Earth History Gallery, the Urban Gallery the Arctic/Sub-Arctic Gallery and the Ancient Sea Gallery, an animated underwater environment. St. Boniface College

The University of Manitoba was founded in 1877 in Winnipeg and included the three founding colleges of St. John's College, St. Boniface College and Manitoba College. In 1904, the university hired its first staff and construction on the buildings began shortly thereafter.

The 25,000 students attending this Manitoba university have a choice of 90 degrees, certificates and diplomas at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The university unveiled Smartpark, a 100-acre technology and research park, in 1999. The university continues to grow and develop with projects to utilize older buildings and revitalize the campus.

Winnipeg Art Gallery

One of the must-see attractions in the heart of Winnipeg is the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Established in 1912 as the first civic art gallery in the country and Manitoba, it has grown to become the sixth largest gallery in Canada.

View nearly 24,000 works of art, ranging from the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art, to decorative arts, international art, photography and works on paper. Afterwards, consider visiting the Manitoba Legislative Buildling, located two blocks away.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

Beautiful music has filled the heart of downtown Winnipeg since 1948. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra provides wonderful cultural opportunities for southern Manitoba residents and visitors, with approximately eighty concerts each year. The WSO initially performed in the Civic Auditorium until 1968, before moving to the Centennial Concert Hall.

The WSO's variety of musical performances not only includes music from master composers, but also family concerts, Pops, special concerts and educational performances. Their educational programs benefit over 25,000 students each year.
